Modern furniture usually refers to pieces dating from after World War II. Some designers use the term “modern” only for post-war American and European furniture from the 1950s and 1960s. To distinguish it from contemporary furniture, 50s and 60s furniture is sometimes called “mod” or “moderne.” Following World War II, families rethought their homes and began to demand comfortable, affordable and stylish mass-produced furniture.

Designers like the Eames brothers, Herman Miller, Florence Knoll Bassett and Hans Knoll helped define the “moderne” furniture era. Pedestal tables, polished sideboards, chrome and vinyl stools, modular sofas and abstract lighting were seen throughout American homes. Furniture designers experimented with new materials like vinyl and tubular metal. Understated monochromatic color schemes, modular elements with multiple uses, and curvilinear shapes became the norm.

The pop sensibility of design influenced the form and function of furniture of the time. Vinyl replaced leather and bright prints substituted for dark brocades of the past. Materials like acrylic, plywood and tubular steel edged out carved hardwoods and wrought iron. New manufacturing methods allowed furniture makers to create oversized, sturdy, non-symmetrical and fluid furniture that defined elegance as minimalist, bright and open.

Many modern furniture pieces of the era were multifunctional, changing the organization and use of living spaces. New shapes like oblongs, ellipses, flares and kidney-shaped furniture replaced the squares, rectangles and circles of pre-WWII furnishings. The deep, rich Art Deco color schemes were dated as buyers trended to gray and black monochromes with pops of bright colors. Contrasting hues of turquoise, chartreuse, tangerine and ruby red highlighted these new creations. Sometimes giant blocks of color contrasted with clear acrylic, light plywood or shiny chrome modular pieces. Mod furniture perfectly complemented this new era of homes and families.
